The Program
Fast Track is a 4-month program that offers participants the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through a work-based learning model. This collaboration between the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council and the Michigan AFL-CIO Workforce Development Institute (WDI) pairs students with subcontractors who are part of major building projects within the city of Detroit participants spend 40 hours per week on site, receive a stipend based on $18 an hour, gain hands-on mentorship support, and a proactive learning experience from trade contractors.
The Purpose:
- Ensure a connection between contractors And Trades with the next generation of pre-qualified local candidates, improving the Dropout rate, closing the skills gap, and building a more diverse and sustainable workforce.
- Build upon existing training programs and connect community initiatives to enhance work-readiness skills, construction education, and develop real-world experience.
- Support participants with work-based learning opportunities to enhance their skills in the trades and give them a better understanding of the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.
- Nurture participants to be successful in their future careers, assist them with applications for full-time positions and registered apprenticeships, and help them retain long-term construction careers.
